Freeform Pool with Beach Entry and Waterfall
Beside a pavilion with cedar screens, this freeform pool features a beach entry, a rock waterfall, and curving timber decking surrounded by raked gravel, moss, pines, and maples.
Design notes
Japanese-inspired pools are dark, still and framed. Look for a rectangular or organic pool with black plaster that mirrors the sky, stepping stones and gravel margins, a single maple or pine pruned for shape, moss and boulders instead of lawn, and cedar or bamboo screens that hide the fence. Lighting is minimal and warm.
What to look for
- The coping — how the deck meets the water sets the whole tone
- Where the spa sits and how it spills into the pool
- Night lighting: which features glow and which stay dark
