No. 64 Pools · Mid-Century Modern
Freeform Pool with Beach Entry and Waterfall
A concrete patio surrounds a freeform pool featuring a beach entry and stacked-stone waterfall, set before a flat roof, post-and-beam house with a decorative breeze block screen and desert plantings.
Design notes
Mid-century pools are geometric rectangles aligned with the house's post-and-beam grid. Look for flush concrete or terrazzo decks with gravel joints, a breeze-block wall or screen, a kidney shape only if the house is from the 1950s, and sparse planting of agave, olive and citrus. Keep the water pale blue and the furniture low.
What to look for
- The coping — how the deck meets the water sets the whole tone
- Where the spa sits and how it spills into the pool
- Night lighting: which features glow and which stay dark
