No. 74 Pergolas · French Country
Wisteria-Covered Timber Pergola on Gravel Terrace
Beside a limestone house with blue shutters, a timber pergola covered in blooming wisteria and climbing roses shades a wooden dining set on a gravel courtyard bordered by boxwood hedges and lavender.
Design notes
French country design pairs formal bones with soft edges. Look for limestone walls and terraces, pea gravel courtyards, an axis or allée of pleached limes or plane trees, and clipped box giving structure to lavender, roses, rosemary and iris. Shutters, wrought-iron furniture, zinc planters and a long table under a tree complete it. Worn surfaces are the point — nothing should look new.
What to look for
- Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
- Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
- Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
