No. 35 Pergolas · English Cottage
Attached Timber Pergola with Garden Dining
Beside a stone cottage, an attached pergola shades timber dining furniture on a paved patio bordered by an English cottage garden filled with climbing pink roses, purple foxgloves, and clipped shrubs.
Design notes
English cottage design is abundance with a plan. Look for brick, flagstone or gravel paths that give the eye a route, borders packed with roses, foxgloves, lavender, catmint and delphiniums, and a little structure from clipped box, a picket fence or an arbour. Materials are aged — reclaimed brick, painted timber, weathered stone — and there is always somewhere to sit: a bench under a tree, a bistro table by the door.
What to look for
- Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
- Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
- Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
