No. 26 Pergolas · Classic

Attached Timber Pergola with Climbing Roses

An attached pergola draped in pale pink climbing roses stands on a bluestone patio beside the pool, shading poolside timber lounge chairs alongside green vines on the brick house.

Design notes

Classic pergolas have heavier timber, chamfered or notched rafter tails, and often a climbing vine — wisteria, grape, roses — that makes the structure disappear in summer. They suit brick and stone houses and traditional garden layouts.

What to look for

  • Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
  • Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
  • Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
