No. 50 Pergolas · French Country
Freestanding Timber Pergola with Wicker Lounge
Beside a limestone home accented with blue shutters, a freestanding pergola shades an outdoor wicker lounge over gravel, bordered by neat boxwood hedges, climbing pink roses, and fragrant purple lavender.
Design notes
French country design pairs formal bones with soft edges. Look for limestone walls and terraces, pea gravel courtyards, an axis or allée of pleached limes or plane trees, and clipped box giving structure to lavender, roses, rosemary and iris. Shutters, wrought-iron furniture, zinc planters and a long table under a tree complete it. Worn surfaces are the point — nothing should look new.
What to look for
- Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
- Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
- Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
