No. 70 Pergolas · Coastal

Timber Pergola Draped with Flowering Vines

Beside a cedar shingle beach house, a timber pergola covered in wisteria, climbing roses, and grapevines shades a wooden dining set surrounded by dune grass, hydrangeas, and a crushed shell pathway.

Design notes

Coastal design lets the light do the work. Look for weathered cedar shingle and white trim, bleached or grey decking, cable or rope railings, and a palette of sand, driftwood and sea-glass. Planting is grasses, hydrangeas, beach roses and anything that tolerates salt and wind; furniture is teak or wicker with white cushions. Keep surfaces matte and colours pale, and the mood stays breezy even miles from the shore.

What to look for

  • Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
  • Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
  • Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
