No. 13 Fences & Gates · Coastal
Hog Wire Garden Fence and Gate
Beside a weathered shingle home, a wooden garden fence featuring hog wire mesh and an X-braced gate encloses gravel pathways and timber raised beds planted with leafy vegetable crops.
Design notes
Coastal design lets the light do the work. Look for weathered cedar shingle and white trim, bleached or grey decking, cable or rope railings, and a palette of sand, driftwood and sea-glass. Planting is grasses, hydrangeas, beach roses and anything that tolerates salt and wind; furniture is teak or wicker with white cushions. Keep surfaces matte and colours pale, and the mood stays breezy even miles from the shore.
What to look for
- Height, and whether the top is capped or open
- Which side faces out and how posts are spaced
- Planting on both sides so the fence reads as a hedge line
