No. 39 Fences & Gates · English Cottage
Wire Deer Fence with Wooden Gate
Built as a tall garden fence, this wire deer fence sits atop a stacked stone wall with an arched timber gate, enclosing raised vegetable beds beside a weathered shingle house.
Design notes
English cottage design is abundance with a plan. Look for brick, flagstone or gravel paths that give the eye a route, borders packed with roses, foxgloves, lavender, catmint and delphiniums, and a little structure from clipped box, a picket fence or an arbour. Materials are aged — reclaimed brick, painted timber, weathered stone — and there is always somewhere to sit: a bench under a tree, a bistro table by the door.
What to look for
- Height, and whether the top is capped or open
- Which side faces out and how posts are spaced
- Planting on both sides so the fence reads as a hedge line
