Farmhouse outdoor kitchens are built like a porch: a gabled or shed roof with a cedar ceiling and a fan, white shiplap or board-and-batten walls, a wood or concrete-topped island, and black or stainless appliances kept simple. Look for gooseneck lights, a farmhouse sink, open shelving and a big table that seats the family.

What to look for

• The work triangle — grill, sink and fridge within a few steps
• Ventilation: a hood, an open gable or clear sky above the grill
• Where guests sit relative to the cook
