No. 3 Sheds, Studios & Pool Houses · Mid-Century Modern
Charcoal Timber Studio with Glass Front
This modern backyard office studio features black vertical wood cladding, a full-height glass front, and a low timber deck opening onto a green lawn flanked by stone flagstone walkways and native shrub planting.
Design notes
Mid-century modern design lines everything up with the house. Look for flat roofs and post-and-beam overhangs, walls of glass, breeze-block screens, terrazzo or large concrete pads with gravel joints, and a rectangular pool set square to the architecture. Planting is sculptural and sparse — agave, yucca, olive, citrus, a Mediterranean fan palm — and colour comes from a single accent: an orange door, turquoise water, a yellow umbrella.
What to look for
- Roof pitch, siding and windows that echo the main house
- The path, the light by the door and the planting around it
- Power, insulation and drainage if you will work or sleep in it
