No. 21 Sheds, Studios & Pool Houses · Coastal
Shingled Art Studio with Large Skylights
Clad in weathered gray shingles, this coastal art studio features three large roof skylights, an open sliding barn door revealing an easel, and a pea gravel pathway bordered by native dune grasses.
Design notes
Coastal design lets the light do the work. Look for weathered cedar shingle and white trim, bleached or grey decking, cable or rope railings, and a palette of sand, driftwood and sea-glass. Planting is grasses, hydrangeas, beach roses and anything that tolerates salt and wind; furniture is teak or wicker with white cushions. Keep surfaces matte and colours pale, and the mood stays breezy even miles from the shore.
What to look for
- Roof pitch, siding and windows that echo the main house
- The path, the light by the door and the planting around it
- Power, insulation and drainage if you will work or sleep in it
