Sunken Brick Patio with Built-In Bench
In this small backyard, a sunken brick patio features a fire pit and wooden bench framed by stone walls, facing a Tudor home with half-timbered walls, steep gables, and leaded glass windows.
Design notes
Tudor design answers the house. Look for half-timbered gables and tall chimneys echoed in dark timber pergolas and arbours, herringbone brick and flagstone terraces, low stone walls, and hedges of yew and box that give the garden formal rooms near the house before it loosens into roses, wisteria and lawn. Leaded glass, copper lanterns and a slightly storybook proportion keep the look coherent.
What to look for
- How the space is zoned — dining, lounging, lawn, planting
- Sightlines from the back door to the furthest feature
- Layers of privacy: canopy, screening, structure
