No. 38 Porches & Sunrooms · Coastal
Cedar-Shingled Sunroom with String Lights
Weathered cedar shingles enclose a sunroom fitted with large glass panels, opening onto a timber deck lit by glowing string lights at night beside ocean dunes and coastal grasses.
Design notes
Coastal design lets the light do the work. Look for weathered cedar shingle and white trim, bleached or grey decking, cable or rope railings, and a palette of sand, driftwood and sea-glass. Planting is grasses, hydrangeas, beach roses and anything that tolerates salt and wind; furniture is teak or wicker with white cushions. Keep surfaces matte and colours pale, and the mood stays breezy even miles from the shore.
What to look for
- Depth — eight feet for chairs, ten or more for a table or a swing
- How the steps and railings meet the walk and the yard
- Ceiling: height, material and whether a fan or lights are built in
