Tropical pools stage a resort at home: palms and broad-leafed planting right to the water, warm timber decking, a thatched or slatted cabana, and water features that add sound as well as movement. Freeform shapes suit the style best, and deep blue or green tile keeps the water looking lush. Plan the planting palette for your climate, or find hardy substitutes.
What to look for
- The coping — how the deck meets the water sets the whole tone
- Where the spa sits and how it spills into the pool
- Night lighting: which features glow and which stay dark
