Concrete Plunge Pool in Mid-Century Courtyard
In this mid-century modern courtyard, a rectangular concrete plunge pool sits on concrete pavers bordered by potted agaves, citrus trees, a breeze block wall, and an exposed post-and-beam flat roof.
Design notes
Mid-century pools are geometric rectangles aligned with the house's post-and-beam grid. Look for flush concrete or terrazzo decks with gravel joints, a breeze-block wall or screen, a kidney shape only if the house is from the 1950s, and sparse planting of agave, olive and citrus. Keep the water pale blue and the furniture low.
What to look for
- The coping — how the deck meets the water sets the whole tone
- Where the spa sits and how it spills into the pool
- Night lighting: which features glow and which stay dark
