Timber Pergola with Suspended Daybed
In a small backyard, a weathered timber pergola features a slatted privacy wall, gravel ground cover, potted yuccas, and a suspended daybed hanging in the corner beside the wood-sided house.
Design notes
Modern pergolas are all about the slat: evenly spaced rafters in aluminium, steel or clear cedar, square posts set outside the furniture footprint and, increasingly, louvered roofs that close against rain. Finishes are black, white or natural timber with no ornament.
What to look for
- Clearance under the beams — 8 to 10 feet feels right
- Slat spacing and orientation against the afternoon sun
- Posts placed outside the furniture, never through it
