Modern outdoor kitchens read as a single object: a long island in concrete, steel or slab stone, appliances set flush, and a roof or pergola with clean square posts. Colour is restrained — charcoal, white, natural timber — and lighting is integrated under counters and overhangs rather than hung as fixtures. The result is calm to look at and easy to keep clean.

What to look for

• The work triangle — grill, sink and fridge within a few steps
• Ventilation: a hood, an open gable or clear sky above the grill
• Where guests sit relative to the cook
