Flower Beds Along Stacked Stone Wall
Cottage flower beds planted with purple foxgloves and pink peonies line a dry-stacked stone wall beside a gravel path and a white board-and-batten home with a black metal roof.
Design notes
Modern farmhouse design keeps things honest: white board-and-batten or painted brick, black-framed windows and doors, standing-seam metal roofs, cedar posts and beams. Outside, that means gravel and bluestone rather than fancy paving, a big lawn, raised beds, a porch or pavilion with a fan, and simple furniture in black or natural wood. Lighting is gooseneck barn lights and warm string lights, never anything glossy.
What to look for
- Path width and bed width — can you reach and can a wheelbarrow pass
- Where the water is and how far the kitchen door is
- Edges and structure that still look good in winter
