No. 33 Fences & Gates · Desert & Southwest
Louvered Privacy Fence Along Flagstone Patio
A louvered wood privacy fence borders a flagstone small patio, featuring a built-in timber bench between concrete planters, desert grasses, potted succulents, and pea gravel paths alongside a two-story home.
Design notes
Desert and Southwest design is shade, earth and sky. Look for stucco or adobe in earthy tones, flat roofs with deep overhangs, decomposed granite and gravel instead of lawn, and planting of agave, yucca, saguaro, ocotillo, palo verde and desert wildflowers. Corten steel, concrete and rammed earth handle the sun; ramadas, shade sails and pergolas make midday usable; and lighting stays low so the stars can compete.
What to look for
- Height, and whether the top is capped or open
- Which side faces out and how posts are spaced
- Planting on both sides so the fence reads as a hedge line
